
BIRDS WATCHING IN VIETNAM AND CAMBODIA
Siem Reap and its misty temples situated in dry deciduous forest with some semi-evergreen forest which have an excellent range of birds, potentially including Black-headed and White-bellied Woodpecker, Velvet-fronted and Neglected Nuthatch,Rufous-winged Buzzard and Indochinese Bushlark, White-rumped Pygmy-falcon or the endearing Collared Falconet etc.
Tonle Sap Lake is the largest natural lake in South East Asia, increasing in area by up to 25% annually as the floodwaters of the Mekong River enter the lake. Situated at the western end of the great lake is the largest waterbird colony in South-East Asia: Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary. Prek Toal is globally important for eight species of bird; Spot-billed Pelican, Greater Adjutant, Lesser Adjutant, Milky Stork, Painted Stork, Black-headed Ibis, Oriental Darter and Grey-headed Fish-Eagle. Thousands of commoner waterbirds also breed here, and over 150 species have been recorded. The colony is at its busiest between December and April, but most species can be found throughout the year.
Nam Cat Tien is a good place for bird watching. Bird species recorded in the park include: green peafowl, Siamese firebacks, Germain's peacock-pheasant, orange-necked partridge, the great, oriental pied and the wreathed hornbills, bar-bellied, blue rumped, blue winged and other pittas, broadbills, woodpeckers, lesser adjutant, milky stork, woolly-necked stork.
The park is also rich in birds of prey including several species associated with the wetlands, such as osprey, lesser fish eagle, grey-headed fish eagle, crested serpent eagle, collared and other falconets.
Tram Chim National Park is located in Mekong Delta, Vietnam. It’s housing as many as 200 types of birds which make up ¼ the bird population in Vietnam. Some of these birds have been put in the Red Book for a long time. The most typical and most well-known one is the Red-headed Crane. Many others are Black-faced spoonbill, Spot-billed pelican, painted stork etc
Cuc Phuong in the North of Vietnam is home to a wealth of beautiful tropical birds, many of them endemic to Vietnam and Indochina. Some of the 308 species of rare birds that you might encounter are the Silver Pheasant, Red-collared Woodpecker, Brown Hornbill, Bar-bellied Pitta and so on. Cuc Phuong is quickly becoming a must-see destination for scientists and birdwatchers alike.
